In the last two articles, we discussed how to choose a cemetery and the benefits of pre-planning your burial arrangements. So, now that you have decided to move forward and speak with the cemetery about your options, what comes next?

The first thing you should do is contact the cemetery to see if an appointment is necessary. Depending on the cemetery, you might meet in person at the site, in your home if that’s more convenient, or even virtually.

Having a clear sense of your preferences—or at least knowing the right questions to ask—will help the cemetery provide you with relevant information, making it easier for you to make an informed decision. If you haven’t done so already, start thinking about the following: Are you leaning toward a traditional full-body burial or cremation? Have you considered a natural or green burial? Do you prefer an in-ground burial in a grave space, or would you rather opt for above-ground entombment in a crypt (for a casket), a niche (for a cremation urn), or a columbarium (a separate outdoor structure for urns)? How many spaces will you need? Are you planning for just yourself, or are you looking for a space that can accommodate your entire family? How much personalization are you looking for?

There are other important questions to consider as well: Are there restrictions on the type or size of headstones? How many people can be buried in each space? What are the rules for decorating gravesites? What hours are visitors allowed? This initial meeting is your opportunity to ask questions, explore the available options, and understand the costs involved. Even if you’re not ready to make a decision right away, the appointment should give you all the information you need to make the best choice for you and your family.
